Western media have spent much of the 2026 on tracking Bitcoin crash From its all-time peak in October 2025 near $126,000 Trezor Academy has produced a documentary which documents a very different story.

Trezor Academy’s Bitcoin Revolution in Africa and Seeding Bitcoin Follows educators, merchants and community members in Sub-Saharan Africa, who use Bitcoin as a practical monetary instrument, not just as an asset for speculation.

This film shows Bitcoin Education Centers in South Africa, where teenagers as well as adults complete Bitcoin Diploma Courses and are rewarded weekly in Bitcoin. Some students use this bitcoin to purchase groceries for their family.

The article profiles a shopkeeper, who initially refused Bitcoin because of volatility fears. However, a local teacher introduced him to the concept of stablecoin settlement. He then became a convert.

This documentary tells the story of a woman, who traveled for 14 hours just to attend an informal Bitcoin event. It also features a drug-addict whose life changed after she got involved in the Bitcoin circular economic system.

All of these people are excluded from the current financial system. Speakers in the film describe populations — refugees, orphans, people without formal addresses or government-issued ID — who cannot access bank accounts, credit, or formal payment infrastructure.

Bitcoins, says one Bitcoin participant “doesn’t recognize if you’re poor or rich, what color your skin is, whether you have some government ID or not.”

Chainalysis recorded more than $205 billion in on-chain value received across Sub-Saharan Africa in the year to mid-2025, up around 52% year-on-year — the third-fastest regional growth rate in the world.

The majority of transfers were under $10,000, which is consistent with the everyday usage by individuals and not institutional flow.

Sending $200 via traditional channels in Sub-Saharan Africa is expensive. It costs close to nine percent. That’s the highest rate of any area, according to World Bank.

The Lightning Network of Bitcoin allows for the same transfer to be made at a cost as low as a few pennies.

Currency instability is a new dimension. On-chain volume in the region increased when Nigeria devalued its naira on March 20, 2025. People were moving their local currency savings to foreign currencies. Communities that have suffered from rampant inflation for multiple generations are more interested in a stable-supply investment outside of government control than they are ideologically.

Trezor Academy: Global bitcoin education

The documentary was created by Trezor Academy. This organization has hosted more than 300 events, graduated more than 2,000 students and operates now in over 30 countries. Local educators teach peers in their native languages.

“This program will not teach everybody in Africa about Bitcoin,” One of the educators in this film says: “What we’re doing here is planting seeds through local educators from which Bitcoin circular economies later grow.”

Trezor added a new donation option in its online shop along with the launch. Donations can be made at the time of checkout by customers or they can make a donation without purchasing anything. Proceeds will support workshops, meetings, and projects sponsored in Global South.

“This article is not financial advice.”

“Always do your own research before making any type of investment.”
