- XRPL will be undergoing significant improvements, including programmability enhancements, compliance features and enhanced lending capabilities. All of this is done while upholding the core values.
- David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO revealed XRPL’s roadmap for X. This includes custom logic improvements that increase functionality without compromising consensus integrity.
As outlined in a post on X by Ripple CTO David Schwartz. He revealed XRPL’s roadmap for 2025. The vision is to achieve a balance of flexibility, efficiency and security. This will allow developers to develop custom functionality without altering core consensus processes.
It’s here – Ripple’s roadmap for institutional DeFi on the XRP Ledger in 2025. As roadmaps go, I (personally) think this one is pretty great – outlining a clear direction with use cases and features (available and to be proposed) of what Ripple will be focused on contributing to… https://t.co/L8WgovxiPJ

A timeline of deployment will include an early Smart Escrows devnet, a Smart Escrows devnet that is fully functional in the second half of the year, Smart Escrows released for voting in the third quarter and a Smart Contracts devnet launched in the fourth.
The community received the news well. Austin King, Calling it co-founder, Omni Network “the biggest upgrade to XRP Ledger since 2013” Highlighting its importance by noting “most chains like Ethereum chose to do full programmability from the start.”
Considerations to XRPL programming
This roadmap emphasizes the use of a permissionless method that allows developers to add new functionality without needing approval from Unique Node Lists (UNL). Programmability goals include seamless integration with XRPL architecture, easy access to native functions, and a low learning curve. The plan will also make sure that there is minimal impact of programmability on security, transaction speed and validator cost.
Ripple evaluated various Virtual Machines and concluded that WebAssembly (WASM) It is best suited for XRPL programmability. WASM provides a balance between performance, integration, and flexibility. It allows developers to execute intelligent logic while maintaining XRPL’s security, speed and cost effectiveness.
XRPL now has extensions
Ripple is introducing a new concept, Extensions. This will allow Ripple to implement smart contracts in a gradual manner.
Extensions are code modules attached to XRPL features such as escrows and tokens. Extensions are small code modules that enhance existing functionality, without the need for a complete rewrite or separate smart contracts. It allows for developers to add custom logic quickly and efficiently, while retaining security.
Smart Escrows are one of Extensions’ first uses cases. They will allow for customized escrow releases conditions. Smart Escrows can be used in real world applications such as notary escrows where a particular account is required to unlock it, or credential based escrows that require the receiver to have a certain credential.
Smart Features of XRPL and its Institutional DeFi capability
Ripple is looking to apply the Smart Feature Model across the XRPL Ecosystem, enabling innovations like Smart AMMs that allow for customized trading curves. Smart Accounts will have enhanced security features such as firewalls and limits on spending.
Meanwhile, XRPL’s native Decentralized Exchange DEX is continuing to grow, with greater automation through the Central Limit Order Book. (CLOB) has been a key component of decentralized trading since its inception. XRPL is one of the more mature blockchains that are driving DeFi adoption. It has processed over 2.8 billion transaction.
Currently, The XRP currency is trading As low as $2.29A. 6.49% In the past 24 hours, the number of people who have been obstructing traffic has increased. 9.89% Over the past seven days, there has been a decline in price. Although short-term price fluctuations may have affected its value, ongoing developments can act as a catalyst to increase adoption and the price.
