We have closely monitored the safety and security of Istanbul over the past few weeks. We are particularly concerned about the impact that events in Israel or Gaza Strip could have on attendees’ safety.
When we host events, we always try to evaluate the risks. We have worked with local community members and event organizers to assess risk in the case of Devconnect Istanbul. We also monitored any government warnings that may affect our community. Recently, we took the additional step of working closely with external risk advisory service to determine where and how changes may be needed to reflect regional conditions.
We want to highlight two important points in advance of future updates.

While the threat to the Devconnect is currently low, there are significant risks of large protests or targeted violence in several Istanbul neighborhoods. These risks may increase over time. next If the conflict between Israel and Gaza escalates, it may take a few weeks.

Israelis, Israeli citizens, and those of Jewish faith or descent are at serious risk. Israel has released a notice warning any Israelis in the country to leave Turkey immediately.

We know this may make some people uncomfortable. However, we made the decision to put the safety of the community first. And we feel it is our responsibility to share the information we’ve learned as quickly as possible.
Many of our members have had to make difficult and emotional decisions in the last few weeks. They also hold different opinions. Aside from the risks, we recognize that Istanbul is physically far away from the heart of the conflict. Also, a vibrant local community has been positive and active every step of this process. We have heard the opinions of people who will be affected personally, from team members working in conflict areas, organizing teams and other individuals that spent a year working towards these events.
