Bitcoin developers who created the Taproot Upgrade didn’t take into account the “social attack surface” Bitcoin developer says that this enabled Ordinals and BRC-20s to be used as spam.

“What they ignore is that Taproot had significant trolling value as the upgrade that Bitcoiners were placing their hopes in,” Bitcoin Core developer Jimmy Song said In an X-video on Sunday, the following was added:

“The increase in the social attack surface of this upgrade wasn’t accounted for at all, let alone considered.”

Song — who referred Orders as a “fiat scam” last year — claimed that Taproot has failed to live up to the hype because it didn’t deliver on the privacy and security features promised.

He cited Schnorr and Script Paths features as a faster alternative to multisig. This allowed three or five of your friends to help you recover a Bitcoin. He said that it was even more complex because it took more signature rounds than multisig.

“Bad user experience basically made it a non-starter,” Song added. Taproot was activated Jonas Nick Tim Ruffing A.J. Townes will join a small group of Bitcoin Core developers in November 2020, based on Gregory Maxwell’s work, which was introduced in January 2018.

Song’s comment comes amid an increasing divide among bitcoiners on which transactions are to be verified or not.

Adam Back, Dennis Porter and Luke Dashjr are among the Bitcoiners who — like Song — prefer Bitcoin to focus on fixing money — and thus serve solely as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, as Satoshi Nakamoto intended it to be used.

Some, including Bitcoin Ordinals leaders “Leonidas,” Taproot has been upgraded and is now being used to create Ordinals and Runes applications, Other things. Bitcoiners of this camp believe that Bitcoin doesn’t need to censor transactions.

Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots are at war because of the runes, or ordinals.

More than 30 Bitcoin Core developers Removed the 80-byte restriction on mobile devices OP_RETURN functionThis allows for a significant increase in the number of pictures, videos, and audio files that can be stored.

But fears that Bitcoin Core — the leading Bitcoin software node operator — could U-turn on the update have sparked a shift to use Bitcoin Knots instead.

Bitcoin Knots has seen a significant increase in the number of nodes. 67 In March 2024, there will be 7,112 nodes. This represents nearly 28% today.

Leonidas, a member of the Ordinals Community in Greece, said earlier this month that they may consider relocating to another country. forking Bitcoin Core If developers reversed a pending update, and attempted to censor Ordinals and Runes as well as other non-financial transaction on the network.

Song still hasn’t abandoned Taproot upgrade

Although Taproot enabled Bitcoin applications hasn’t yet met Song’s expectation, he doesn’t dismiss it as a possible benefit for Bitcoin.

“Taproot can, of course, redeem itself, maybe Ark ultimately decentralizes mining, maybe BitVM creates way more Bitcoin demand. But so far, Taproot has not lived up to the cost users paid to get it.”

Leonidas believes that runes, ordinals and other symbols have improved Bitcoin security.

Leonidas, meanwhile, has claimed that Ordinals & Runes contributed more than $500 million to transaction fees. strengthen Bitcoin’s security — something which has become an increasing concern as the network’s mining block subsidy continues to halve every four or so years.

Dune Analytics estimates that the cost of Ordinals fees will range from $3,060 in 2019 to $537.400 by 2025. data shows.

This $537,400 amount is less than a twenty-fifth of $9.99 Million that Bitcoin miners earned from Ordinals in 2023.
