Shortwave Coffee is a global coffee chain that accepts Bitcoin. The same four questions are asked by millions of Bitcoiners who walk up to counters. “Do you accept bitcoin?”. The answer to half of our questions is “no”. It’s not a question we ask, but the expression on a cashier’s face is always amusing when an unknown asks for magic internet money in exchange for a $5 latté.
In this year, the numbers are in our favour. By March 2026 Square began automatically switching on bitcoin acceptance for up to 4 million terminalsThe feature is now enrolled by default, instead of being an opt-in option. Although the periodic rollout has been more gradual than wave-like, it still feels like an update. You’ll see that many Square terminals have not yet been updated. Many of us have decided to accelerate the rollout by ourselves. We went into shops and asked for the manager to make the case that bitcoin payments should be enabled. This series will follow the progress of each business.

In the Saint Louis, Missouri area there are approximately 250 independent coffee houses, one of which has gained unwavering loyalties from a handful bitcoiners. Why?
Shortwave Coffee The company began in Missouri as a small family-run business in 2014. It now has five locations: one in St. Louis and two in Columbia. There are also outposts located in Minneapolis and another in Tampa. The roasters pull an excellent espresso and accept bitcoins at the cash register.
In the past months, local Bitcoiners have asked their baristas multiple times and written to their generic company’s email. They finally heard yes in July of 2026. St. Louis’ shop is located in Central West End, at 33 N. Sarah Street. The St. Louis shop has a large indoor café with a capacity of 75+ people, a patio that is bordered by wildflowers (see attached picture), and plenty of street parking. You can also find the original Columbia Shortwave locations two hours away to the west. These have an equally great atmosphere. The same modern design, local feeling, and Bitcoin acceptance.
This whole article is based on the idea that we can choose the best shops for us to shop at. They will only accept bitcoin if their clients ask them to. Bitcoin is not a discriminatory option like Square.
