The Ethereum Foundation was accused by senior builders of failing to provide support for layer 2 developers.

You can read more about it here:

  • Sandeep Nailwal, Polygon’s Sandeep Nailwal, says Ethereum Foundation does not directly support Polygon.
  • Andre Cronje of Sonic Labs shares similar concerns.
  • Vitalik Buterin praises Polygon and Nailwal both for their contributions and impact.

Sandeep Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon said that his loyalty towards Ethereum was eroding. He claimed that Ethereum Foundation had provided him with a lot. “no direct support” Polygon has played a long-standing part in the growth of Polygon.

The Oct. post He argued on X that Polygon (POLEthereum has been dismissive of the work done by many.ETHHe believes that the Ethereum community has not recognized its status as layer 2, despite it powering some of Ethereum’s biggest applications.

Nailwal claims that the Ethereum community is becoming insular

Nailwal said that the Polygon ecosystem, which includes networks like Katana, XLayer and XLayer remains tightly linked to Ethereum. He claimed that the community does not consider Polygon’s success to be part of Ethereum’s overall success.

Polygon could have a market value of up to $600 million, he said. “two to five times higher” If it were to position itself as an independent layer 1 chain and not maintain ties with Ethereum.

Peter has spoken out and I’m now ready to do the same.

NGL, my loyalty to Ethereum is now in question. Ethereum is the reason I got into crypto, not Bitcoin. The Ethereum community is also something I’m very thankful for. @VitalikButerin — someone I looked up… https://t.co/yrcrGEwXs8

— Sandeep | CEO, Polygon Foundation (※,※) (@sandeepnailwal) October 20, 2025

He made his comments after a week-long internal discussion among Ethereum developers, founders and other stakeholders about the role of the foundation in supporting external builders. Nailwal’s comments echo concerns expressed by other contributors in the past who have raised questions about how the Foundation allocates grants to developers and recognizes them within the ecosystem.

Sonic’s Cronje raises similar concerns

Andre Cronje echoed Nailwal’s comments, saying that he too has “burned over 700 ETH” Building on Ethereum is possible without any support or grants. Not even a tweet.

What am I supposed to do? I am confused. I’ve spent over 700 ETH while building on ETH for deployments and ETH infrastructure. When I tried contacting EF there was no response. No BD outreach. No grants. Not even a retweet. When I started helping out with Sonic eco I was… https://t.co/LmVqXWBXoU

— Andre Cronje (@AndreCronjeTech) October 21, 2025

Cronje pointed out that the newer Sonic projects are a stark contrast to his (S(ecosystem) receives financial and technical support. Nailwal’s allegations of uneven support in Ethereum’s developer communities were bolstered with his remarks.

Vitalik Buterin is the co-founder and CEO of Ethereum.

In a subsequent X responseVitalik Buterin – cofounder of Ethereum – thanked Nailwal, and Polygon (for their contributions). Polygon’s efforts in developing zero-knowledge tech and their attempts to use AggLayer to scale Ethereum were highlighted by Buterin.

Buterin cited Nailwal’s contributions to projects such as the Balvi Biotech Program and CryptoRelief. “real-world impact far beyond crypto.”

Buterin continued to state that the recent advances in ZK-proving systems could make it possible to integrate Polygon with Ethereum’s mainchain and offer stronger security assurances, suggesting an avenue for future collaboration.
