Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, said that institutions who want to control their own operations would drive decentralization and not undermine it.

You can read more about it here:

  • Vitalik Buterin says that institutions would prefer to self-manage and independently stake their own coins.
  • Ethereum could be strengthened by institutional control over wallets, staking and other aspects of Ethereum.
  • Buterin says that zero-knowledge and privacy technologies will be a part of the regulatory process.

Buterin, in a piece on Farcaster, argues that the demands of corporates and governments for independent stakes and self-custody staking are likely to strengthen cryptocurrency. Ethereum’s Decentralization is preferable to concentration of power.

“Institutions will want to control their own wallets, and even their own staking if they stake ETH. This is actually good for Ethereum staking decentralization,” Buterin writes.

This prediction questions the assumption that centralization is inevitable when institutional adoption occurs.

Institutional self-custody reduces external dependencies

Buterin described institutional behavior using game theory, and suggested that the best strategy was to control internal operations whilst resisting intrusion from outside.

“Institutions are often staffed by highly sophisticated people, who have a much deeper understanding of these issues than regular people and a much deeper will to do something about them,” The he wrote.

As corporations and government seek to increase their assurances over the operations they conduct, this trend will intensify. Buterin differentiated between institutions who minimize their dependences and users who are reducing sovereignty.

There is a relationship between “institutions” The following are some examples of how to get started: “cypherpunk” It is complex, and it must be properly understood. Institutions (both government and corporate) can be neither friends nor enemies.

“That’s the thing that we as the Ethereum community must insist on, and build tools to help people achieve,” He stated.

Buterin gave two examples that contrasted the institutional approach: The European Union supports open-source software aggressively while at the same time pushing legislation for Chat Control, which mandates encryption backdoors.

Signal is used by the US Government for secure communication while Patriot Act continues to be law.

The stablecoin industry will be seeking governance diversification

Buterin said that European Union asset-issuers would prefer blockchains which avoided excessive US control.

While governments will increase the requirements for Know Your Customer, privacy tools can be improved by cypherpunk developers. “The more realistic equilibrium is that non-KYC’d assets will exist, and ability to use them with strong privacy will grow,” Buterin writes.

In the coming decade, he predicted that there would be a growing demand for zero-knowledge evidence of funding source. This will lead to ideological disagreements about what appropriate response is.

“I do not believe that cypherpunk requires total hostility to institutions,” Buterin concludes “Instead, I support a policy that institutions are already used to using against each other: openness to win-win cooperation, but aggressively standing up for our own interests.”
