Ethereum.org serves as an educational website for Ethereum. It’s a portal that allows users to access information and learn more about the platform.

We have been running the ethereum.org Translation program Since July 2019, the website is intended to be available to all, including 6 billion non-English speaking speakers.

We provide educational content and essential onboarding in as many languages and dialects as we can to make learning about Ethereum, and becoming a Ethereum developer or user, as easy and convenient as possible.

As we continue to add more translated content, the number of visitors to ethereum.org from languages other than English has increased steadily. Currently, over one quarter of traffic is coming to the site in non English-speaking languages.

Non-English vs. English pageviews on the site over time

The website is now open.sourceAnyone can contribute code, content or features to the site. They can also translate, improve the design, or add new features. Discover the different ways you can contribute on our contributing pages.

The Translatathon

In August of this year, the first ethereum.org Translatathon was held to raise awareness of the importance of localizing the content in the space. We also wanted to onboard new contributors and encourage translations of our less-active languages. Here’s what happened.

What is a Translatathon?

A Translatathon, also known as a hackathon, is a translation contest.

Translatathons do not require any coding knowledge or technical background. Participants can be anyone who is bilingual and knows some basics about Ethereum.

The event is also a chance for participants to translate the website content and learn about Ethereum while competing for prizes.

This is a short overview of how ethereum.org Translatathon took place:

  • 2-week application period

    • Participants forming and applying for teams

  • 1-week translation period

    • Participants translate content in the ethereum.org project in Crowdin
    • The two categories are divided into: The Teams The following are some examples of how to get started: Individuals
    • Machine translation is forbidden.

  • One-week evaluation period and Quality Assurance

    • All participants were given a grade for their translations.
    • The winner was determined based upon their The total number of words translated Multiply by their multiplier score

The full details can be found on the Translatathon page.

What did you think?

The Translatathon received 621 applications in total and 217 participants translated into 56 languages during the translation period.

Translations were translated for 1.47m words during the competition, making it the most productive translation program month ever (previous: 497k).

The amount of translated content during the one-week translation period is approximately 50% of all the content translated throughout the entire program until 2022.

Translation activity during the past 12 months

The goals of the Translatathon were:

Raising awareness of the importance localizing content It is difficult to quantify and never-ending, but individuals have expressed interest in participating in similar projects and certain projects are looking to begin or improve their localization process.

Join the program as a new contributor – During the month of March, 486 new members have joined the ethereum.org project in Crowdin. Many of the participants and winners are new contributors

Translations in less active languages can be rewarded. Participants translated into 56 languages, including seven new languages that the website has not yet been made available in. The site will be able to accommodate a large amount of new content in the next few weeks.

Our contributors get a little something back – More than 70% of participants in the Translatathon (155 of 217) qualified for a prize. The total prize pool was 30,000$ plus other prizes

Languages

The distribution of active language was extremely diverse with 56 total languages and 31 languages that had 2 or more participants.

Some languages stand out based on their activity and the number of participants:

  • Turkish: 20 translators, 167k translated words*
  • Indonesian8 translators, 196k words translated
  • Spanish116k translated translations by 15 translators

*The website is now 100% translated into Turkish. Devconnect Istanbul 👀

The other most active languages include German (59k words translated), Russian (58k words translated), Chinese Traditional (15 translators), Persian (13 translators), and Polish (63k words translated).

Results

The Individuals and Teams winners were:

Individuals

  • 1st place: MGETH (Spanish)
  • 2nd place: Satglow (Hungarian)
  • 3rd place: wosek_ (Polish)

The Teams

  • 1st place: sinasi (Turkish)
  • 2nd place: Translation Volunteers (Turkish)
  • 3rd place: TME (Persian)

We also awarded honorable mentions to 30 individuals, 10 teams and the top translators in each language. Participatory prizes were given to all participants who translated more than 100 words but did not win any other prizes.

Thank you to all participants and congratulations!

What’s next?

The ethereum.org community continues to work on improving the accessibility of the website for non-English speakers and translating its content, even after the Translatathon has ended. Anyone can join.

You can learn more about the Translation program and get involved here.

Stay tuned for more community engagement initiatives if you missed the Translatathon!
