Block, Inc., (NYSE:XYZ), has introduced Proto Rig, an innovative modular system. bitcoin mining Proto Fleet software, which is free to use, allows fleet managers to manage their vehicles. This represents a major step in decentralizing mine hardware and improving efficiency. Bitcoin network resiliency.
Core Scientific in Dalton (GA) made the announcement at its facility, where Proto Rigs have already been deployed to mine bitcoins. Following its original chip sale to Core Scientific, this launch is the first of two full-scale releases for Proto Block’s suite of Bitcoin mining products and service.
Bitcoin mining hardware is currently plagued by significant inefficiency. The majority of machines have a single purpose, are prone to breakdowns and require expensive, time-consuming repairs. They also present a challenge to upgrade. The result is wasted energy, poor utilization of space, and a shorter life cycle. On the software side, miners are often forced to piece together multiple tools to manage power scaling, monitoring, and diagnostics — creating a fragmented and costly operational environment.
Proto Rig aims to directly address these challenges by introducing a durable, modular design that transforms a historically disposable 3–5 year asset into a 10-year infrastructure investment. Operators can swap out individual hashboards instead of replacing entire units, cutting upgrade costs by 15–20% per cycle. Tool-free in-place repair allows for repairs to be made in a matter of seconds, rather than taking hours or even days. This reduces downtime.
“Mining hardware hasn’t really changed in years,” Thomas Templeton is the Hardware Lead for Block. “Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and don’t make the most efficient use of power or space. With Rig, we set out to change all of that–and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process.”
Proto Rig has 1.5x the power per square foot than conventional hardware. It is compatible with legacy and modern infrastructure.
Proto Fleet, along with the hardware, aims to provide a comprehensive open-source software for fleet management that combines power scaling, monitoring, diagnosis, and maintenance into one intuitive platform.
“Mining hasn’t really caught up with advances in software more broadly,” Templeton Notes “We saw an opportunity to make mining software something modern that improves operational efficiency instead of unnecessarily complicating things.”
Block’s decision to make Proto Fleet available to all mining companies, regardless of size, ensures that they have access to management tools with high quality without being locked into proprietary software.
Proto Rig and Proto Fleet could redefine mining economics by combining their repairability and power efficiency with open-source software. Block has a broader commitment towards the Bitcoin ecosystem. This is reflected in its initiatives such as Square, Cash App Bitkey and Spiral.
