The Blockchain and Physical Art Auctions

Christie’s New York is hosting a dinner on Tuesday, October 2, 2020. An Eye Towards the Real: Photographs from the Collection of Ambassador Trevor Traina.

His auction, which focused mainly on fine art photography introduced an important shift in tracking ownership. Christie’s, in partnership with Kresus (a provider of web3 wallets), offered digital certificates for ownership on each sold photograph. These certificates were saved on the Blockchain, creating an irreversible record of ownership.

In this case, blockchain technology is used to resolve long-standing concerns about provenance and authentication in the market for art. Blockchain offers collectors a way to verify their purchase history by providing transparent and secure ownership records.

Cryptographic Art: Bitcoin Ordinals

Christie’s London will hold another auction in October 2024. Ascend, An image of a digital work inscribed into the Ordinals Protocol for Bitcoin.

It was the very first auction in which an Ordinals-based piece of digital art was offered. Created by artists Ryan Koopmans and Alice Wexell, the piece fetched £44,100.

Use the Ordinals Protocol to inscribe digital assets On Bitcoin is seen as a tool that digital artists can use to create larger and more complex works. Ascend’s sale reflects the growing acceptance of digital art powered by blockchain in auctions.

Why is this event important?

The two auctions show how the blockchain technology is expanding to include traditional and digital art.

Christie’s The use of certificates backed by blockchain for artworks, and the auction of an item inscribed with Bitcoin Ordinals show that the technology has evolved to serve a wider range of collectors.

The art industry could be transformed by blockchain as it continues to integrate into its management. It will change how provenance and ownership are handled. Christie’s latest auctions indicate that NFTs, and records backed by blockchains may be an important part of the future art auctions.
