Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has announced that he will be pausing the long blog posts he usually writes to concentrate on writing a sci-fi novel about decentralized governance.

You can read more about it here:

  • Vitalik Buterin is stepping away from his regular essay writing to focus on science fiction themed governance
  • Ethereum’s co-founder says that he already completed the first two chapters in the novel.
  • His writings on governance and cryptography will now be recast as narrative fiction, rather than technical essays

EthereumETH) co founder Vitalik Buterin He has stated that he no longer plans to publish blog posts on a regular basis. “try writing some science fiction stories on the theme of decentralized governance,” A post according to shared Vitalik.eth, his Farcaster Account. He shared a link to a science fiction novel in progress, noting that chapters 1 and 2 have already been completed. His creative energies are now being shifted from research and essays into a narrative project focused on governance experiments within crypto-native systems.

This pivot is a significant change in the career of one of the most prominent public intellectuals within the blockchain industry. His long-form posts, which have covered topics such as Layer 2 scaling, account abstractions, soulbound tokens, and governance debates often helped to set the tone for Ethereum’s social and technical discussions. Buterin’s choice of science fiction is a way to move his decentralized governance thinking out of whitepapers and blogs and into fictional storytelling.

The ideal software and hardware world is one where all products are compatible. “nutrition labels” that provide a full list of trust dependencies – what math and which actors’ honest behavior (and on what time scale) the system is relying on to provide its core functionality and implied guarantees. https://t.co/89paTXDiIL

The world of governance: From essays on governance to the governance world

Buterin’s essays, which have been published for many years, dissect governance designs in everything from Layer 2 rolls up to nation-states and voting system, arguing often that an overly centralized approach undermines resilience and credibility in crypto ecosystems. By shifting this inquiry to fiction, he can test out edge cases which would be impossible or unreliable to try directly on the mainnet. He will place governance mechanisms in hypothetical societies, networks, and crisis scenarios, and let them play out as a narrative.

This approach is part of a larger tradition where science fiction authors have used imagined futures as a way to test out coordination mechanisms, technological limitations, and social contracts. Buterin can use the history of Ethereum to inform a fictional novel about decentralized governance. This includes contentious hard-forks, funding discussions, and protocol upgrades.

The story of Ethereum, in literal terms

This announcement comes at a moment when Ethereum, and the broader crypto market, are grappling with multiple governance issues, including protocol upgrades, how DAOs manage treasuries and legal exposure, as well as voter apathy. Buterin will not stop working on technical issues, but he is stepping back from his regular blog posts. This suggests future contributions to governance discussions may come first in the form of stories and less formal essays or proposals.

This is a new influence vector for Ethereum. Instead of dense posts, which only the protocol’s insiders can read, an accessible science fiction novel about decentralized governance will reach more readers, builders and policymakers. The experiment will either change the way people think about chain governance, or add a layer of complexity to Buterin’s vision. already The decision, which is a huge body of work in itself, signals that Ethereum’s most prominent thinker sees fiction now as a serious forum for tackling the toughest problems associated with decentralized power.
