Co-founder of BTC Media eleven years ago, I am passionate about the future of Bitcoin – and in the spirit of free speech and democracy on this election eve – I feel compelled to share my first Bitcoin Magazine opinion article. Aaron Van Wirdum was our editor in chief when he published the article “Take,Trump Does Not Give a Damn About Bitcoin“, and invited counter-takes.
The mission behind our company’s founding was hyperbitcoinization. From the start, we have placed a high priority on educating Main Street in regards to Bitcoin. We’ve made great strides. I believe Trump – as standing president – with pro-Bitcoin advisors, could significantly fast-track Main Street’s embrace of Bitcoin, create the world’s most pro-Bitcoin economy, and commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence… a powerful trifecta.
Aaron’s skepticism in Aaron’s Take isn’t one that I hold; instead, I believe in Trump’s support for Bitcoin. The inner circle of Trump is filled with Bitcoiners, and people who support Bitcoin, including his children, JDVance, Elon Musk, RFK Jr. Tulsi Gabrield, Vivek Ramaswamy and Senators Lummis Blackburn Hagerty Scott and many others.
Trump is a Bitcoin novice, and like most others, he’s still learning. It is easy to understand and respect his curiosity, and the desire to grasp fully what money will be in the future. It is certainly more desirable to have a U.S. presidential candidate who has been exposed to Bitcoin and surrounds themselves with pro-Bitcoin policies and advisors than the previous administrations that were openly hostile.
In Aaron’s TAKE, Trump was chastised for failing to transact his own bitcoin purchase at a campaign stop at PubKey – a Bitcoin bar in Greenwich Village; again, there is no stone to throw here. The fact that Trump took up Thomas Pacchia’s offer to visit PubKey and make a stop was exciting to me. Harris extended the invitation to Trump and Trump only accepted it. It was an act of kindness, made by a community member, that brought joy to the business, as well as the network of Bitcoin companies that had struggled with politicians for acceptance.
You might wonder, like others, if Trump’s Bitcoin interest is driven by donations or votes. What drives us to achieve a shared goal? We are a diverse community with diverse reasons for embracing Bitcoin — whether a desire for financial sovereignty, an investment opportunity, a sudden inability to purchase basic necessities during a protest, a distrust in the existing financial system and, yes, even politicians seeking the Bitcoin community’s support through donations and votes.
Bitcoin Community is aware that Bitcoin will thrive and flourish despite politics. However, some issues are not apolitical. Trump said, unambiguously, at Nashville’s Bitcoin 2024 Conference (and the Libertarian National Convention) that if he is elected President, he would free Ross Ulbricht. Trump has promised to perform a miracle in the Ulbricht’s family.
I had the golden opportunity to meet Trump backstage at Bitcoin 2024 (alongside two strong, intelligent women – his granddaughter Kai and her mother Vanessa). Trump seemed warm, sincere, and humorous. Trump is a great addition to Bitcoin.
